Aussies roar back in Barbados

Hilfenhaus burst breathes new life into first Test

Ben Hilfenhaus ripped through West Indies' top order after Australia had declared 43 behind on day four of the first Test against West Indies in Barbados.

Seam bowler Hilfenhaus reduced West Indies to 4-3 in their second innings at tea before the home side recovered to 71-5 at the close, leading by 114 heading into the final day at the Kensington Oval.

Ryan Harris' 68 not out had earlier seen Australia up to 406-9 in their first innings and allowed Clarke to make an aggressive move that paid off handsomely.

The day had actually started well for West Indies, claiming the wickets of Michael Hussey, Peter Siddle and Matthew Wade inside the first 14 overs as Australia slipped from an overnight 248-5 to 285-8, still 121 behind.

Wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh took a low catch to his left to get rid of Hussey (48), who drove away from his body at an angled delivery from Kemar Roach in the fourth over of the morning.

Siddle followed for a duck in the next over, looping an edge to Kirk Edwards in the gully after taking his eye off a Fidel Edwards short ball.

Fidel Edwards (2-92) added the scalp of debutant Wade, edging to Darren Bravo at second slip for 28.

Peppered

Harris and Hilfenhaus frustrated West Indies with a ninth-wicket stand of 46 that saw Hilfenhaus in particular peppered with short balls, including one from Fidel Edwards that hit him right on the badge of his helmet.

Hilfenhaus advanced to 24 with five fours before Roach (3-92) uprooted his middle stump as he missed with a wild drive.

But more frustration followed for the home side, Harris bringing up his maiden Test half-century from 76 balls during a 77-run partnership with last man Nathan Lyon either side of lunch.

Lyon played his part as well and had reached a career-best 40 when Clarke signalled for the declaration.

Harris, who successfully overturned an lbw decision on 66 to deny Fidel Edwards a wicket, hit seven fours in his Test-best effort.

And Hilfenhaus (3-17) then struck three times in six balls to leave West Indies reeling.

Adrian Barath (2) played a full, swinging delivery into his stumps straight after Hilfenhaus set him up with a bouncer.

Flashed

And Barath's opening partner Kraigg Brathwaite (0) followed two balls later, flashing well outside his off-stump and edging through to wicketkeeper Wade.

In Hilfenhaus' next over, the fifth of the innings and last of the middle session, Kirk Edwards (1) went lbw, a decision that was upheld on review as replays showed it was hitting leg-stump.

Australia made another breakthrough shortly after tea, Harris (1-14) finding the outside edge of first-innings centurion Shivnarine Chanderpaul (12) and Wade doing the rest.

At 17-4, West Indies were in danger of a humiliating collapse but Bravo and Narsingh Deonarine (20no) regrouped with a half-century partnership.

Bravo led the way with 32 off 78 balls and was furious with himself when he fell with the close in sight. The left-hander edged behind off Siddle's bowling (1-11), driving away from his body.
