BBL: Eagles soar in deciderNewcastle beat Raiders to claim fifth BBL Trophy since 2005Charles Smith: scored 16 points in the Eagles Trophy triumph Newcastle Eagles lifted the BBL Trophy for the third time in four years with a 96-80 victory over Plymouth Raiders in Friday night's thrilling final in the North East. The Eagles overturned a nine-point first-leg deficit to avenge the bitter memory of the Raiders' 2007 Trophy win on Newcastle's floor. After a tight opening period, the Eagles took control in a scintillating second quarter, outscoring the visitors by 30-11 in the final six minutes to make it 55-41 at the half and establish a five-point lead on aggregate. The Raiders hit back in the third though, grabbing eight straight points to start a 14-2 run for 63-59, to go five up themselves on the overall score. But the Eagles rallied to finish the quarter trailing by just one on aggregate before closing the game out to claim their second piece of silverware in 2012 following their BBL Cup triumph over the Raiders in January. ResistancePaul Gause led the Eagles with 19 points and 7 assists, with Andrew Thomson (17), Charles Smith (16) and Joe Chapman (16) scoring ten three-pointers between them. The Mersey Tigers won for the first time in five games in the BBL Championship with a 74-85 win over One Health Sharks Sheffield at the English Institute of Sport. The Tigers inflicted a first home defeat in four outings on the Sharks to move to just two points behind eighth place and keep their play-off hopes alive. Sam Cricelli led all scorers with 25 points, supported by 22 from Myles Hesson and 12 from Matt Otten, while Jimmy Langhurst and Mike Tuck led the resistance with 19 points each for the Sharks. |
