Chisnall makes Power pay

St Helens ace denies Taylor a perfect weekend in Reading

Chisnall makes Power pay

Dave Chisnall: Beat Phil Taylor once again after his World Championship triumph in December

Dave Chisnall made Phil Taylor pay for missed doubles as he recorded a dramatic 6-5 victory to win Sunday's Players Championship in Reading.

In the process Chisnall denied Taylor a perfect weekend, after the Stoke legend won Saturday's event - he also hit nine-darters on both days.

With the scores tied on 5-5 in Sunday's final, Taylor was first to a finish, but opted against throwing for the bull on a 161 combination, and then missed three darts at double 16. Chisnall stepped in to land double 18 for the triumph.

The win was Chisnall's second on the PDC ProTour in the past six months, and puts him a step closer to qualification through the ProTour Order of Merit for the likes of the World Matchplay, European Championship and World Grand Prix.

"It feels good beating Phil after what happened at the World Championship," said Chisnall, who shocked Taylor 4-1 to reach the last-16 at Alexandra Palace in December.

"He could have won this game but he missed a couple of doubles there and I took my chances.

Stronger

"This time last year I would have lost a few of the games that I won today but I'm getting stronger and getting better.

"I've done well so far this year and felt good coming into this event. My goal again this year is to get into all the TV events and this win pushes me on a little bit further."

Earlier on Sunday, Taylor landed a nine-darter in coming from behind against Peter Hudson in round one - hitting 180, 180 and a 141 finish.

The nine-darter came after the world number one also hit a perfect leg in Saturday's Players Championship, in which he beat Wes Newton 6-1 in the final.

Speaking after beating Newton, Taylor, who averaged 113.54, said: "It's a brilliant day's work. The win pretty much means I'll be in the Players Championship Finals later in the year, and it's great to keep my form up.

"When you look around the field and see the games going on elsewhere, you realise how hard each tournament is, so I'm really pleased to have won."

He recorded his nine-darter on Saturday when beating Tony West 6-1 in round two, following up scores of 174 and 177 by taking out 150 with a treble 20, bull and double top combination.
