We will stay positive, says Wolves boss

Terry Connor: Knew the risk he was taking when he agreed to manage Wolves

Terry Connor does not regret taking the interim role as Wolves manager even though he knows it could cost him his job.

Connor had worked under four different managers before being given the chance to take the reins at Molineux until the end of the season when Mick McCarthy was sacked in February.

And the 49-year-old has endured a miserable spell in charge, picking up just one point out of 24 and losing his last seven games.

Defeat at Sunderland on Saturday could mean Wolves are relegated with four games still to play but Connor insists he went into the challenge with his eyes wide open.

"I knew what I was doing," said Connor. "I knew that (the danger of my future) when I took the challenge on. I knew that was the case.

"It is kind of strange when people say your future rests on 13 games, after 13 years here, but I knew when I took over that would be the case and I welcome the challenge.

"I've taken over until May 13. I'm a big boy, I know the score in football, I know what happens. I went in with my eyes wide open.

Risk

"People ask if it was the biggest risk I've ever taken and I say 'no' because I think I can do the job. How I am judged after the 13 games is down to the club and what they want to do in the future.

"I felt ready to take on that challenge and I've enjoyed every minute. Whether I still have a job, you will have to ask the club.

"We will all sit down at the end of the season, assess what has gone on over the course of the season and discuss the last 13 games.

"The club will find their path and take the path they want to take in the future and if that's with me, fine. If not, I accept that as well.

"I've worked here for 13 years and enjoyed every minute and been a manager for 13 games out of that 13 years.

"I'm sure I could swallow my pride and go back and do something else. I don't think that would be an issue."

Wolves are already nine points adrift of safety after a spirited 3-0 defeat to Arsenal in midweek and Connor knows his team are now facing an uphill task.

"We just have to keep playing in the manner and spirit we showed against Arsenal for the next five games and, wherever we end up, we'll accept it," he added.

"We've won one game in 18 so, if you are asking me if we can win five out of five I'm saying that is the challenge.

"But you know that would be a tall order for even Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea or Arsenal to achieve.

"It's a challenge and we'll be meeting it and where we end up, we end up.

"It's imperative we stay positive and the players showed against Arsenal that they are not prepared to roll over and accept defeat.

"That's the way the players are, the way I am. All I can ask is they play with that same spirit and determination for the next five games and, if we do that, you can have no comebacks."
