Centre looking to push on after penning two-year extension

Evans extends Blues stay

Gavin Evans: Delighted to have extended his stay with the Cardiff Blues for another two seasons

Gavin Evans has handed Cardiff Blues a boost by signing a two-year contract extension with the region.

The centre has made 41 appearances for the Blues after joining from Scarlets in 2009.

Backs coach Gareth Baber has hailed the attitude of the 27-year-old and believes he can help the club push on.

Baber said: "I think that we have a young backline and Gavin still has a lot of good years ahead of him as a player.

"He's found it tough over the last couple of seasons with a class act like Casey (Laulala) coming in but what Gav has done is be totally professional and kept training and pushing hard.

"He's got a great skill level, he's a great reader of the game and a great communicator as well.

"He's the sort of person with the right skillset, the right work ethic and the right attitude that we want in this environment.

"For us to move forward as a group and show young players how it's done I think Gavin shows all those characteristics."

Positive season

Evans is pleased to have committed to the Blues after what he describes as "a real positive season for me personally."

He added: "For the first two seasons I didn't play that much rugby but coming into this season, it was my last year of the contract, I've been fortunate to show what I can do.

"In fairness to Gareth and Justin (Burnell), they've given me confidence and it's great to be playing week in and week out for a great team.

"It all comes down to not necessarily individual form but collectively the whole team pulling together, from the ones starting to those not selected."

Evans added that as soon as he started playing more games he knew he wanted to stay.

"I enjoy the style of play we have at the Blues and the coaches are easy to talk to," he added.

"We lost a lot of players to the World Cup at the start of the season but that gave an opportunity for me and a lot of the youngsters to shine.

"I know we have lost a couple of big names for next season but hopefully that will bring us closer and hopefully we can put in some good performances next year."
