Lions receiver signs lucrative new seven-year contract extension

Megatron nets mega deal

Calvin Johnson: Has agreed seven-year contract extenstion worth reported $130m

Calvin Johnson has become the highest-paid wide receiver in the NFL after signing a seven-year contract extension with the Detroit Lions.

The 26-year-old's new deal, which will keep him with Detroit through the 2019 season, is worth a reported $130 million over its total duration of eight years, with $60 million of that guaranteed.

However the contract actually reduces Johnson's salary cap number this season from his original $22 million, according to the team.

He continued to establish himself as one of the top players in the league in 2011, catching 96 passes for 1.681 yards and 16 touchdowns, with all three marks being career highs.

"Calvin is just entering into the prime of his career. The things you saw Calvin do this year, the next five years, you're going to see even better things coming," Lions receivers coach Shawn Jefferson told the team's official website.

"You are going to see even more explosion out of this guy and it's going to be scary. I think this guy is rewriting the books."

Cole extends

Meanwhile, the Philadelphia Eagles have agreed a contract extension with star defensive end Trent Cole that will keep him with the team through the 2017 season.

The two-time Pro Bowler becomes the second Eagles player to ink an extension in in recent days, with linebacker Todd Herremans also committing for another three years on Tuesday.

Cole posted a fourth straight double-digit sack campaign last season, taking down the quarterback 11 times in total.

His 68 sacks since being drafted in the fifth round in 2005 make him the third most prolific pass rusher in Eagles history behind only Reggie White (124) and Clyde Simmons (76).

"We are excited to be able to sign Trent to a new contract. Trent plays the game with a level of tenacity that's hard to replicate," Philadelphia head coach Andy Reid said.

"He's one of the premier defensive ends in the league. We have always said that when you watch the tape of him, it's hard to tell the difference between his first play and his last play."

The Indianapolis Colts has also looked to have retained the services of one of their star players after they reportedly re-signed Reggie Wayne to a three-year deal.

It was thought that Wayne could follow the like of Pierre Garcon and Dallas Clark out of Indianapolis as the Colts start a rebuilding process, but is instead set to stay with the Colts.
