Skiing: Cool KroellAustrian claims outright downhill win in KvitfjellKlaus Kroell: Pipped Jansrud for downhill win Klaus Kroell crashed the party in Kvitfjell, denying two Norwegians to take the World Cup downhill event on Saturday. Tying Beat Feuz for the Super-G win on Friday, Kroell maintained his form to clinch an outright victory on the same piste 24 hours later, beating Kjetil Jansrud - third on Friday - and Aksel Lund Svindal to top the podium Jansrud, who was just 0.03 seconds off the pace in the Super-G, was denied a first downhill victory by 0.02 in another near-miss. "I'm in love with this mountain. I love the area, it really feels like home," said Kroell. "Winning the downhill World Cup has always been my biggest goal. It was my objective at the start of the season and to achieve such a performance under such pressure is a huge satisfaction. "Luck was also on my side, 0.02 seconds is nothing but the hundredths of a second used to go the wrong way in the past." Kroell now leads Swiss Didier Cuche by 48 points with only one race remaining at the World Cup finals in Schladming, Austria, later this month. Cuche could only finish 10th on the Olympiabakken piste on which he won downhills in 2007 and 2010. His compatriot Feuz finished just outside the medal placings, adding 50 points to his overall total, extending his lead in the race for the overall championship globe over Marcel Hirscher by 55 points. Kvitfjell will host another Super-G on Sunday. |
