Skiing: Mielzynski magicCanadian springs big surprise while Schild takes overall slalom titleErin Mielzynski: Came from nowhere to win slalom at Ofterschwang Canada's Erin Mielzynski took the first World Cup victory of her career while Marlies Schild wrapped up the overall slalom title at Ofterschwang. Mielzynski set a combined time of 1 minute 53.59 seconds to finish 0.05s ahead of American Resi Stiegler, who achieved the best World Cup finish of her career in coming second. Austria's Schild finished in third position to clinch the overall slalom crown, while overall World Cup leader Lindsey Vonn fell on the first run. Tina Maze of Slovenia had led at the halfway point but also failed to finish after coming unstuck on the second run. Tanja Poutiainen of Finland finished in fourth position while the top five was completed by Canada's Marie-Michele Gagnon. Mielzynski was a surprise winner of the event as her previous best World Cup results had been a pair of 13th places last year. "I worked really hard this year and I battled with my confidence and so many things that I managed to do that," she said. "I didn't do anything different, I just skied on race day like I do in training." Stiegler, whose promising career has been set back by injuries in recent years, steps onto the podium for the first time, with two fourth places her previous best efforts. |
