Skiing: VR reigns againGerman favourite denies Vonn to pick up second win of the weekendViktoria Rebensburg: Back to back wins in Ofterschwang Viktoria Rebensburg overcame a mistake to claim a World Cup giant slalom double on home snow in Ofterschwang, Germany. Rebensburg, who won a GS on the same piste on Friday, held on for victory after Lindsey Vonn had thrown down the gauntlet with a sensational second run. Vonn, 10th on Friday in her weakest discipline, was sixth at halfway but nailed the second run, gaining immense speed at the top before navigating the slower bottom section with perfection. It looked like she may have done enough with Tina Maze and then Anna Fenninger failing to match her overall time, but Rebensburg held a 1.68second advantage and it proved to be enough. The German was exemplary on the top section but got low on one gate two-thirds of the way down, forcing her wide, but she held on by 0.26secs with Vonn a further 0.13secs ahead of Maze. "Two wins in two days, it's superb," she said. "It was pretty tight in the second run; it was not so easy to ski and I was not really on track. But it was enough." Rebensburg leads the standings by 135 points from Vonn with two races remaining, while the American has a 494 point advantage over Maze in the overall. |
