WWE Review 2011

Skysports.com's wrestling fanatic James Coyle looks back at the highs and lows in WWE throughout 2011

WWE Review 2011

CM Punk: WWE Superstar of the Year

It's that time of year again where wrestling fans reflect upon the year gone by and are keen to share their views on which Superstars they believe deserve recognition for their efforts throughout the past twelve months.

Not only that, but WWE fans around the world each have their own opinion and fond memories of who they consider to be the WWE Superstar of the year, the best wrestling match of the year and the best pay-per-view event of the year.

Skysports.com's wrestling fanatic James Coyle looks back at the highs and lows in WWE throughout 2011 to compose his thoughts on what has been yet another thrilling year in the ever popular world of Sports Entertainment.

WWE Superstar of the Year: CM Punk

For Superstar of the Year, I narrowed it down to Alberto Del Rio and the Straight Edge voice of the voiceless CM Punk. Upon reflecting on both Superstar's efforts and achievements throughout the past year, I eventually opted for the latter.

Punk started the year with an outstanding feud against Randy Orton that culminated in a great match at WrestleMania. Not long after that, Punk then delivered his infamous rant on Monday Night RAW. Just weeks later, CM Punk went on to have one of THE greatest wrestling matches in WWE history at Money in the Bank against John Cena.

Desptie WWE dropping the ball on Punk throughout the summer, the fan favourite not only reportedly sold more merchandise than company golden boy John Cena, but went on to win the WWE in November, which he later retained in a thrilling Triple Threat main event at WWE's TLC event in December.

WWE Match of the Year: John Cena vs. CM Punk (Money In The Bank)

Nothing else comes close to matching the build up, the wrestling, the emotion and the sheer brilliance of the finish to WWE's Money In The Bank 2011 main event. It was an amazing match which restored my confidence in WWE's then dwindling product.

A contender to Punk's memorable victory over Cena would be Randy Orton's defeat of Christian at Over The Limit back in May. Of all the matches these two SmackDown Superstars competed in, their outing at Over The Limit, in my opinion, bettered every one of them.

WWE Pay-Per-View event of the Year: Money In The Bank

I cannot remember a pay-per-view event as highly anticipated and as must-see as this year's Money in the Bank show in Chicago, Illinois. The event was one of six pay-per-view events broadcast on Sky Sports, and gave WWE fans around the world a night that they will never forget.

Money in the Bank was the first pay-per-view in such a long time in which every match on the card had been given a good build. Not only that, but every match lived up to it's billing which resulted in this show being an easy pick for pay-per-view event of the Year.

WWE Moment of the Year: CM Punk's Infamous Promo on RAW

If you missed this, don't worry, it's not hard to find on the internet. CM Punk closed an edition of Monday Night RAW with one of the most controversial promos in the history of the show.

It's not difficult to see why I've chosen this as the moment of the year, as the rant included lines such as "The fact that Dwayne is in the main event at WrestleMania next year and I'm not makes me sick" and "I'd like to think that maybe this company will be better after Vince McMahon is dead"

In my opinion, Punk's reality-based tirade was probably the most memorable shoot to come out of Monday Night Raw in over a decade.

The Year Ahead...

2012 promises to be a big year in WWE. WrestleMania XXVIII takes place at the Sun Life Stadium in Miami, Florida on April 1, 2012 and will feature a much talked about main event match between the biggest star of today, John Cena, against arguably the biggest star of yesterday, The Rock, in a feud that has been building since it was announced back in April.

Outside of WrestleMania, the most unpredictable match of the year gets underway in just a matter of weeks when the 25th Royal Rumble event comes your way live on Sky Sports Box Office HD on the night of Sunday January 29 at 1am.

Do you agree with James' picks for 2011? Maybe you disagree? Why not have your say below.
