Ouseph eases throughFive-time English National champion Cann topples Swede
Rajiv Ouseph: eased through 21-10 21-13 in 28 minutes against Ernesto Velazquez Rajiv Ouseph quickly saw off Spain's Ernesto Velazquez to book his place in the second round of the European Championships in Sweden. Ouseph, England's No.1 and the sixth seed for the event, eased through 21-10 21-13 in 28 minutes to set up a clash with Ukraine's Dmytro Zavadsky. England team-mate Carl Baxter also went through in the men's singles, beating Italy's Giovanni Greco 21-17 21-6, while youngster Toby Penty saw off Josip Uglesic of Croatia 21-13 21-17. Scottish men's singles pairing Kieran Merrilees and Alistair Casey both went out, though, losing to Petr Koukal of the Czech Republic and Germany's Dieter Domke respectively. In women's singles action on Tuesday, Elizabeth Cann - a five-time English National champion - came from behind to beat Sweden's Jenny Wan 16-21 21-13 21-17 in her opening-round match. There was a further boost for Cann when Scotland's Susan Egelstaff, her rival for a Great Britain Olympic spot, surprisingly lost 23-21 21-14 to Czech Kristina Gavnholt, meaning she will miss out on vital ranking points. Better fortuneScotland's current national champion Kirsty Gilmour enjoyed better fortune, seeing off Hungarian Orsolya Varga 21-17 21-11. England's Sarah Walker lost to Estonia's Karoliine Hoim while Sarah Thomas of Wales also exited. There was better news for England's top-ranked pair in the doubles, as Heather Olver and Mariana Agathangelou comfortably saw off the challenge of Alina Artamonova and Ekanerina Bolotova of Russia 21-6 21-16. Alex Langley and Lauren Smith also progressed, knocking out Germans Steffi Annys and Severine Corvilain 21-16 21-11, but eighth seeds Jenny Wallwork and Gabby White were beaten by Dutch duo Selena Piek and Iris Tabeling. Thomas and Welsh team-mate Carissa Turner found third seeds Line Damkjaer Kruse and Marie Roepke too much to handle, going down 21-17 21-13, but Scottish pair Gilmour and Jillie Cooper beat Estonia's Kertu Margus and Grete Talviste 21-10 21-8. In the men's doubles, sixth seeds Chris Adcock and Andrew Ellis beat Serbians Nikola Arsic and Vladimir Savich 21-7 21-6, but Martin Campbell and Angus Gilmour went out to Vitaly Konov and Dmytro Zavadsky of Ukraine.
