Watson eyes Olympic glory

British number three looking to win a medal on home soil

Heather Watson: Targeting Olympic glory at this summer's Games

Heather Watson has revealed that her primary focus this year is winning a medal at the Olympic Games in London.

Wimbledon is normally the one all the Brits want to impress at, but with the Games being on home soil they have taken on added significance.

Watson insists she will still be giving 100 per cent to win at the All England Club.

But the 19-year-old admits her main goal is the Olympics as she knows there is unlikely to be another chance in her lifetime to play at a London Games.

Focus

"This year my main goal and what I'm really focusing on is playing at the Olympics, because being here in London is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I want to take that and do everything I can to compete and play for my country," explained Watson.

"During Thanksgiving I was in Florida and we had this debate at the table about what we thought tennis players thought was more important, the Olympics or grand slams.

"It's just different for different people. It depends. It was about 50-50. Some were saying they thought the grand slams were more important, others the Olympics.

"This year, with the Olympics being in London, for me this is my main goal.

"It's just that Wimbledon will be held next year and the year after and so on. Of course I'm going to go in there giving it 100 per cent, but this Olympics, London 2012, when is the next time it's going to be here?"

Resurgence

Watson has slipped down the rankings after reaching 87th last year but believes she is hitting her stride again after being hindered by a 'silly' football injury.

"I haven't had the best of years because I had an ankle injury, which was tough," she continued. "It was totally out of the blue, too, because I did it playing football, which was silly. I've quit football now.

"But I've started to find my game now and recently had a good week in Miami, making the third round. So I've gained that confidence and feel like I'm finally finding my game."
