Australia seal dramatic winGoal in the final seconds of extra time downs the Silver FernsAustralia celebrate winning the World Championship title Australia have been crowned world champions after a dramatic extra time victory over New Zealand. There was little to choose between the two Trans-Tasman rivals, but the Diamonds snatched a 58-57 success in the last seconds of extra time. New Zealand had started well, with Irene van Dyk scoring 34 goals from 35 attempts and Maria Tutaia netting 23 - however the turning point came as Caitlin Bassett moved from GK to GS for the second half. Bassett landed 27 goals to help Australia to victory, with Catherine Cox (12) and Natalie Medhurst (19) also on target. The match had finished level at 46-46 after normal time and 52-52 after the first extra period. The decisive moment came when Tutaia missed an attempt to win the game for the Silver Ferns with 10 seconds left. Australia quickly snaffled the loose ball and raced up the court to snatch a stunning victory. England, who had been toppled by the Silver Ferns in the semi-finals, had to settle for the bronze medal after they blew away Jamaica 70-49. It is the first time England have claimed third place since 1999, with Jo Harten leading the way with 51 goals from 61 attempts. Geva Mentor also impressed in defence as she frustrated Romelda Aiken and Jhaniele Fowler. |
