10:53 Howe wanted history |
Howe wanted historyPearson demands strong finish from FoxesEddie Howe was disappointed at missing the chance to set a new Burnley club record after a 0-0 draw at Leicester, while Nigel Pearson still wants a strong finish. The Clarets arrived at the King Power Stadium with 10 away league wins under their belt this season. Victory would have equalled existing figures set in 1992, 1973, 1961 and 1957, with a final away trip to rivals Blackpool to come on Saturday, but a huge slice of misfortune robbed Burnley of the opportunity. Both sides created chances to score but Charlie Austin came closest to breaking the deadlock just before the hour mark when he saw a header strike both posts. A magnificent tackle from Leicester defender Sol Bamba then prevented the Burnley striker from tapping the ball into an empty net from two yards out. History"It's another clean sheet, which is really pleasing for us, but we said before the game that we were desperate to go for the 12 wins and make history for the football club," said Howe. "But it's a good point really. In the first half I thought we were excellent. "We had some great moves, especially in the first half on the counter attack, and we created some decent chances and on another day I'd like to think we could have taken one of them. "In the second half it was more defensive from us as Leicester were on top but I still thought we had the best chances in the game." On Austin, Howe added: "Take the chances out of the game and I thought Charlie was excellent. "His aerial play and his hold up play was excellent against two very good defenders and it's a difficult job when you are up there. I thought his overall game was very good. "Any cross that came into the box he was a threat as usual and I thought he was unlucky with the one that hit both posts. Then it was a great tackle by Bamba to be fair." PositivelyThe stalemate ended Leicester's hopes of gatecrashing the play-off and Pearson pointed to inconsistency as the reason for the pre-season promotion favourites failing to live up to expectations. But the Foxes boss wants his team to finish the season strongly in their remaining fixtures at home to West Ham and away at Leeds. "We have two games left and we have to try and win those and finish the campaign as well as we can," Pearson said. "We still want two performances as it is important we finish as positively as possible. "The reason we have missed out is because we have not been consistent enough. Back-to-back wins on only two occasions is not good enough. "We were unable to sustain any sort of run. Clearly you are not going to have success if you don't do that and that is something I will look to address." On the game itself, Pearson added: "We tried to break down a very stubborn side who clearly came to keep it exceptionally tight but we were unable to do so. "I felt we were the team that tried to win the game, and it's frustrating for everyone because as fans you want to see your team scoring goals and the players want to be as positive as possible but sometimes it just doesn't happen for you."
