20:01 BBL: Riders down Jets |
BBL: Riders down JetsRundles stars for Riders as they beat Cheshire JetsCameron Rundles: Star for Riders Jelson Homes DMU Leicester Riders came from behind with a powerful final quarter performance to defeat Cheshire Jets 85-78 as Cameron Rundles poured in 27 points and both Andrew Sullivan and Ayron Hardy claimed double-doubles. The game started at a brisk pace and it was Jets who took the initiative with an early 13-7 lead but Riders came alive and Bradd Wierzbicki tied things up at 17-17. John Lavery and his Jets team were buoyed by their double-winning weekend and full of confidence, they managed to edge back ahead 24-22 at the end of the first period. Riders had an excellent start to the second quarter and found themselves 32-27 to the good but Jets suddenly began to hit everything and it looked like it may change the game when they exploded with a 17-2 run as a triple by Keith Page handed them a surprise double-digit advantage. But, Riders ensured the game hung in the balance during the interval after they worked their way back to make it a one-shot game heading to the locker rooms. When the teams returned to the floor for the third quarter, it was again characterised by distinct streaky runs of scoring by both clubs and a real sense of déjà vu. Jets built on their modest lead at the interval by moving six points ahead at 49-43 after free-throws by Kai Williams but, Riders then produced a 9-2 bust with a Barry Lamble basket putting them one point in front. Home fans might have expected their team to move though the gears but Jets moved ahead again at 62-54 with the hosts suffering a drought after scoring just once in almost four minutes. Again Riders fought their way back and regained their shooting touch as Sullivan completed a 9-0 run for his team to put their noses in front once more. However it didn't last long as Colin O'Reilly ensured it was Jets who took a one point lead into the final quarter. It was at the beginning of the last period when the Riders made their move and the Jets hopes of continuing their good run faded as the home side began to take control. They upped their defensive effort and after managing just two points in six minutes, the visitors imploded and Riders took full advantage. Their 14-2 start to the final quarter broke the game and killed off Jets as Rob Paternostro and his team eased their way to victory. Sullivan finished with a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds while Molten BBL Player Of The Month for March, Ayron Hardy had 10 points and 11 assists. Matt Schneck completed a double-double of 10 points and 13 rebounds before fouling out for Jets while team-mate Bill Cole just missed out on the same accomplishment by one rebound. |
