Challenge Cup round-upChallenge Cup wins for Leigh, Sheffield, Batley and Oldham
John Kear: Guided Batley into the fifth round Loan signing Ryan Brierley scored four tries to help Leigh to a crushing 68-18 win over Rochdale Hornets in the fourth round of the Carnegie Challenge Cup. The Centurions, Cup winners at Wembley in 1971, established a 26-12 half-time lead at Leigh Sports Village, where Brierley, who is on loan from Castleford, provided the second-half highlight with a hat-trick. Other former Wembley winners Sheffield Eagles ran in nine tries in a 50-12 rout of York at the Huntington Stadium. Nev Morrison and Quentin Laulu-Togagae both scored two tries as the Eagles built on an 18-0 half-time advantage. John Kear, a Cup winner with Sheffield and Hull, saw his Batley side hang on for a 21-18 victory at Hunslet. Tries from Gareth Potts, Gareth Moore, Alex Walmsley and Ian Preece put Kear's men into a 20-10 lead early in the second half, but Andrew Yates and David March both scored their second tries of the match to set up a tense finish. With both teams scoring four tries, Moore's two goals to one from the Hawks' Luke Helliwell proved the difference while the Batley half-back also put over a 78th-minute drop goal. Oldham over-turned a 14-6 half-time deficit to score 20 unanswered points after the break and run out 26-14 winners over Barrow to book their place in Monday's fifth-round draw.
