Citroen choose not to appealTeam will not fight Hirvonen's disqualification in Rally of PortugalMikko Hirvonen: Disqualification from Rally of Portugal stands Citroen have announced that they will not appeal against Mikko Hirvonen's disqualification from the Rally of Portugal. The Finn had finished in first place but was stripped of the victory in the Faro-based event due to clutch and turbo charger irregularities on his DS3 WRC. Citroen initially stated their intention to appeal, but after their own analysis failed to show up any technical findings that would have overturned the penalty they decided not to proceed. In a statement Citroen confirmed that their clutch supplier had given them an apology for sending a batch of parts that did not meet the required technical specification, while adding they believe the turbo charger issue was down to wear. Team boss Yves Matton said: "We accept this harsh penalty but are determined to learn the lessons and ensure that we will be even better in future. Determined"We still lead both world championships, but the gaps have been reduced. We now go into the upcoming rallies more determined than ever to get back to winning ways." The win would have moved Hirvonen into the lead of the drivers' championship but as it is he has to settle for fourth in the points standings. Hirvonen added: "Obviously, I am very disappointed but I am not annoyed. These things happen. You have to accept them when they do, learn the necessary lessons and go again. "Citroen has done a lot for me in the last few months so I stand united with the team at this difficult time. We win together, and we lose together. This incident just makes me even more determined. I can't wait to start the next rally and go competing again." The decision means Adapta Ford driver Mads Ostberg keeps his first world championship win after inheriting victory when Hirvonen was excluded. |
