Eagles soar to victoryEastbourne take maximum points from meeting with King's LynnDavey Watt: Triggered Eastbourne fightback with win in heat six (Image: TSG Photos) Eastbourne Eagles overcame a slow start to claim a convincing 49-41 Elite League victory over King's Lynn Stars at Arlington Stadium. The visitors looked set to spring a surprise in the opening stages of the first live televised meeting of the season but Eastbourne came storming back to ultimately take all three points. The Stars were victorious in all of the first five heats but then won only two of the remaining 10, as the likes of Lewis Bridger and guest rider Davey Watt finally came into their own. The victory put the Eagles three points clear in the early-season table, but they have ridden more than any other team having already competed in three meetings. King's Lynn started with a 5-1 courtesy of Niels-Kristian Iversen and Daniel Nermark then maintained the advantage when David Howe, who would finish as the meeting's top performer, won the second heat of the night. The winning run continued for the visitors as Kevin Wolbert won the third heat of the night and Howe stormed to his second victory of the night in heat four. AdvantageEastbourne had mopped up the rest of the points paying positions to keep the gap stable at four points, but a 5-1 in heat five - with Iversen again winning - gave the Stars a 19-11 advantage. The Eagles finally got their first win on the board when Watt took the sixth heat, with Bridger following that up with victory in heat seven before Lukas Dryml made it three in a row as the hosts finally sparked their night into life. The comeback continued with Simon Gustafsson's win in heat nine, which cut the deficit to two points, and the turnaround was completed next time out as Watt and Dryml led home a 5-1 to give Eastbourne a 31-29 lead. Another maximum haul followed in the next heat thanks to Bridger and Denis Gizatullin, with the points in the next two heats being shared to leave the score at 42-36 with two to go. The victory was assured when Gizatullin and Cameron Woodward took second and third behind Howe in the penultimate heat to leave King's Lynn six points behind with only five left up for grabs. Howe and Iversen were sent out to try and secure a point in the last heat, but Bridger and Gustafsson combined for a 4-2 to ensure the Eagles came away with maximum points. |
