Garcon, 25, spent the first four seasons of his career with the Indianapolis Colts but has switched to Washington, where he is likely to get the chance to catch passes thrown by Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III.

The Redskins are expected to take Griffin III with the second pick of April's draft after agreeing a switch in positions with the St Louis Rams, a deal which includes the Rams getting the Redskins' first-round pick in 2013 and 2014.

Garcon's contract includes an $11m signing bonus and $20.5m in guaranteed money.

The Redskins also handed a four-year, $20m deal to defensive end Adam Carriker.

Marques Colston was another receiver to sign a five-year contract, although in his case it was to remain with the New Orleans Saints.

The Seattle Seahawks struck deals to keep defensive end Red Bryant and special teams ace Heath Farwell with the team.
