HQ ground delights ProsserNewmarket officials pleased with going ahead of Craven Meeting
Good ground forecast for Craven meeting Newmarket director of racing Michael Prosser is thrilled with ground conditions ahead of this week's Craven meeting. The ground at Headquarters is currently described as good and conditions look set fare for two quality cards which should give plenty of Classic clues. Prosser said: "We are very happy with the condition of the course. "The cover of grass is good and we are more advanced in terms of growth than last year by possibly as much as three weeks. "If you were to race on it now, it would be spot-on good ground." Prosser has been advised that there is due to be some rain in the next few days, with the bulk of it likely to fall early on Tuesday. "The rest of Sunday and Monday are likely to stay dry with a slight frost forecast for first thing Monday morning," Prosser continued. "We are forecast for rain to come in at about dawn on Tuesday for three to four hours and we should get about five millimetres. Further showers are forecast on Wednesday and Thursday." The feature event on Wednesday is the Lanwades Stud Nell Gwyn Stakes, while a day later the highlight is Novae Bloodstock Insurance Craven Stakes, which looks likely to see the Dewhurst Stakes third Most Improved tackle Fencing, who filled the same spot in the Racing Post Trophy. "Firstly, it is very pleasing that the respective entries for both the Lanwades Stud Nell Gwyn Stakes and the Novae Bloodstock Insurance Craven Stakes are up, numerically," Prosser added. "In terms of depth, the two races look fascinating, too. Nell Gwyn Stakes entry Wading is the winner of last year's Rockfel Stakes, a race that historically is a good pointer towards the Qipco 1000 Guineas. "The interesting aspect about this year's Craven Stakes is that it will probably bring together the form of the Dubai Dewhurst Stakes and the Racing Post Trophy, providing a first opportunity to measure the worth of these two prestigious races."
