Jonas earns China spotLightweight given chance to book London ticket
Natasha Jonas: Closing on Olympic dream Liverpool lightweight Natasha Jonas has been selected for the World Championships in China in May, which doubles as an Olympic qualifier. Jonas will join double world silver medallist Nicola Adams and Hartlepool middleweight Savannah Marshall in targeting a place in at least the semi-finals, which will guarantee qualification for the Games. While the places for Adams and Marshall were never in doubt, Jonas had to beat off tough competition in the shape of Hartlepool veteran Amanda Coulson and the fast-rising Chantelle Cameron. Jonas said: "Just winning the opportunity to qualify for the Olympics ahead of two superb boxers like Amanda and Chantelle is a great achievement, but the challenge now is to earn my place in London." In the unlikely event that all three boxers fail to reach the semi-finals in Qinhuangdao, Great Britain are guaranteed one place at London 2012 as host nation, which would almost certainly go to Adams. The World Championship squad will be supplemented by Lancashire's Lisa Whiteside, who will represent England in the non-Olympic featherweight division after a good performance in last year's European Championships. GB Boxing performance director Rob McCracken said: "The female squad has made great progress in the last two years. The women have gained a lot of experience and have a track record of winning medals."
