Lowes builds case for defence

Rhinos assistant delighted with early defensive effort

Lowes builds case for defence

James Lowes: Believes good defence laid the platform for Leeds' win over London

Leeds Rhinos assistant coach James Lowes was full of praise of the team's defence in their emphatic 52-10 win over London Broncos on Easter Monday.

Brian McDermott's side made a slow start to the contest with the visitors on top inside the opening 20 minutes, although the champions' defence held firm.

Leeds had lost three straight prior to the win at Headingley Carnegie and Lowes believes their strong defence early on in the piece laid the platform for returning to winning ways.

"We would have preferred to start the game doing a little less defence," Lowes told the Yorkshire Evening Post.

"But it's really good they held out. It is a tough period Easter and the second game is just a case of trying to get through injury-free and trying to pick up a win.

"We did that. London had a real crack at us, we gave them an opportunity and they had a really good go in the opening period, but we came through and we finished strong in the end."

Strong performances

Lowes was also delighted to see excellent displays from the likes of Jamie Peacock, Brett Delaney and Ryan Bailey, who marked his return from suspension in Good Friday's loss to Bradford Bulls.

"We had some strong performances throughout the game, particularly JP, Ryan Bailey and Brett Delaney. They were fantastic," Lowes added.

Leeds did not plan to utilise Bailey for the full 80 minutes, although an injury to ex-Huddersfield prop Darrell Griffin forced their hand.

"He had no other role to play than his front-row role," said Lowes.

"Losing Darrell Griffin early on kept Bails out there longer than we would have anticipated, but he is fit enough to handle that."
