22:40 Magny-Cours still wants race |
Magny-Cours still wants raceFrench circuit still hoping for return of Formula OneThe Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours: held French Grand Prix from 1991 to 2008 Magny-Cours has not given up on hosting Formula One should the French Grand Prix return to the calendar in 2013. The circuit, located in central France, hosted F1 between 1991 and 2008 but despite its fast-flowing layout, was unpopular with teams and fans due to a lack of infrastructure such as hotels and poor transport links to the venue. The race seemed likely to return to Paul Ricard next year, which last hosted a Grand Prix in 1990, but has since been transformed into a high-tech test track, with a plan to host the race at the Castellet venue publicly backed by the government. But now Magny-Cours have recruited former F1 team boss Guy Ligier to help with their bid, and he has already been in contact with Bernie Ecclestone. "I try to lend a hand as much as I can," Ligier told French newspaper L'Equipe. "I phoned Bernie several times as a friend. I asked his advice and we talked about the hotels around the area. He said: 'Guy, I hold you in the know'. "I have a feeling that Bernie is not going to sign anything before knowing the outcome of the presidential election. "I feel this is not lost for Magny-Cours." |
