Mendez-Laing closes on return

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing: Hopes to return for Wolves soon after impressing on loan at Peterborough last season

Wolves' highly-rated youngster Nathaniel Mendez-Laing could feature in the club's relegation battle following a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

The lightning-paced winger has been out of action since October after suffering a knee injury whilst on loan at Sheffield United.

However, the 19-year-old, who scored once in 11 appearances during his time with the Blades, says that he is close to being available for first-team selection at Molineux.

"It feels good to be back in training because I've been sidelined for around five months now and training with the first team again has been great," Mendez-Laing told Sky Sports.

"There was a reserve game on Tuesday night, but that came too soon for me, so I'll have to wait till the next reserve game, which is in a few weeks against Manchester United.

"Hopefully, from there onwards I'll be available for selection for the first team if all goes well.

Amazing

"I did my hamstring first and went back to Wolves for about a month-and-a-half, but then on the same day I went back up to Sheffield I tore a meniscus in my knee, which put me out for around four months due to the surgery required.

"Obviously, the chance to play in the Premier League, which is probably the biggest league in the world, would be amazing and to do that at the club where I started would be even better.

"If I can contribute in any way to helping keep Wolves in the Premier League it would be a great way to end the season."

Mendez-Laing caught the eye last term after helping Peterborough clinch promotion to the Championship during a season-long loan and was expected to progress further this year, but he remains upbeat following his six-month absence.

He added: "It was very frustrating because it has taken a section of my career away from me and I felt that this was a very important season for me having done so well at Peterborough.

"Now it is just a case of seeing how well I bounce back once fully fit and then taking it from there because I believe that everything happens for a reason."
