20:51 NHL: Blackhawks make play-offs |
NHL: Blackhawks make play-offsChicago into the post-seasonJoe Pavelski: Two goals for the Sharks Brent Seabrook was the hero for Chicago, scoring a winner in the third period after the Blackhawks had surrendered a four-goal lead to seal their place in the post-season with a 5-4 win over the Nashville Predators. Chicago seemed to be cruising into the play-offs as goals from Patrick Sharp, Dave Bolland, Patrick Kane and Viktor Stalberg put them 4-0 up 8:35 into the second period. Two goals from Shea Weber and one apiece from Martin Erat and Alexander Radulov pulled the Predators level, but Seabrook struck 8:19 into the third period to send the 2010 Stanley Cup champions through. The result also meant the St Louis Blues sealed the Central Division title despite losing 5-2 to the Columbus Blue Jackets. There was no such drama for the New Jersey Devils as they clinched their place with a 5-0 win over the Carolina Hurricanes. David Clarkson, Ilya Kovalchuk, Ryan Carter, Petr Sykora and Zach Parise got the goals which ensured the Devils advanced. Stamkos recordSteven Stamkos set a single-season record for overtime goals as his fifth gave the Tampa Bay Lightning a 3-2 win over the Winnipeg Jets. Stamkos has now scored an NHL-leading 56 goals in all this season, while the Lightning were also grateful to Ryan Malone who scored twice, sandwiching the Jets' replies from Antti Miettinen and Kyle Wellwood. The Washington Capitals established a two-point lead in the battle for the final play-off spot in the Eastern Conference, beating the Montreal Canadiens 3-2 in a shoot-out after giving up a two-goal lead. Washington led through Mathieu Perreault and Jay Beagle before Erik Cole and Tomas Plekanec pulled Montreal level, but Matt Hendricks and Alexander Semin scored in the shootout for the Capitals. It was a similar story for the Ottawa Senators, who led 3-0 in the first period, saw the Philadelphia Flyers pull back to 3-3 in the second, then won it 4-3 through Jason Spezza's decisive shoot-out goal. David Krejci scored twice to help the Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins, who scored four times in the third period, to a 6-3 win over the New York Islanders. The Vancouver Canucks beat Calgary 3-2 in overtime to eliminate the Flames from play-off contention. Ray Whitney had a goal and an assist to reach 1,000 career points in the Phoenix Coyotes' 4-0 win over the Anaheim Ducks. Joe Pavelski scored twice to help the San Jose Sharks win 3-0 against the Dallas Stars, the Minnesota Wild beat the Los Angeles Kings 4-3 after a shoot-out and the Toronto Maple Leafs saw off the Buffalo Sabres 4-3. |
