Skiing: Relentless VonnAmerican wins final downhill of the season in SchladmingLindsey Vonn: Dominant once again in the downhill Lindsey Vonn rounded off a dominant downhill season with victory in the final speed event of 2011-12 in Schladming, Austria. The American, who had already secured the crystal globe such was the margin over her rivals, scored another stunning success to confirm her as the overall champion once again. Vonn clocked one minute, 46.56 seconds on the Streicher course to beat second-placed Marion Rolland of France by 0.92 seconds with Tina Maze completing the podium. Victory meant Vonn finished 290 points clear of runner-up Tina Weirather in the season-long standings. It was her 53th World Cup win and 12th this season - only Vreni Schneider of Switzerland won more races in one season - 14 - in 1988-89. "This definitely is my best season ever. It went well in all disciplines," Vonn said. "Twelve wins in one season, I can't believe it's true. "It's a great win in the sense that the world championships will take place on the same course next year." With a super-G and a giant slalom race left, the American is also within reach of the 2,000-point record for one single season held by Austria's Hermann Maier. "That's going to be another fight," said Vonn, who has 1,908 points. "I will try to get to these 2,000 points. It won't be easy on this (soft) snow. Hermann was a genius when he achieved it back in 2000." |
