SPL round-upHoops claim league title; Wins for Gers, Hearts and AberdeenCeltic: Crowned Scottish Premier League champions at Kilmarnock Celtic won the Scottish Premier League title for the first time in four years with a 6-0 thrashing of Kilmarnock at Rugby Park in the early kick-off on Saturday. In the day's other games, Rangers, who were deducted 10 points for going into administration - a punishment that effectively handed the crown to Celtic weeks before they actually sealed it - secured their fourth win in the last five games. There were also wins for Hearts and Aberdeen while St Johnstone were held at home. Neil Lennon's Celtic side needed one point from the match to end their long wait to be crowned Scottish champions and they did it in style as Gary Hooper and Charlie Mulgrew both netted twice, with Glenn Loovens and Joe Ledley also on the scoresheet against Kilmarnock. It was the club's 43rd championship in their history and Lennon's first as manager. Rangers collected their third straight victory in the SPL thanks to a 3-1 win against 10-man St Mirren at Ibrox. Lee McCulloch opened the scoring for the home side after just 50 seconds and further goals from Paul McGowan and Kyle Lafferty sealed the points. The Saints have collected four points from their last two encounters against the Gers this season, but were second best on the day. Aberdeen stunned high flying Dundee United with a 3-1 win at Pittodrie to make sure the visitors left empty handed. Darren Mackie had given the hosts the lead with his first league goal of the season but Jon Daly levelled for United when he volleyed home just before the half-hour mark. The Dons secured the win thanks to second-half goals from Chris Clark and Ryan Jack. St Johnstone failed to break down stubborn Inverness at McDiarmid Park but still moved above Dundee United into fourth position in the table with the point. Jonny Hayes had the best opening of the game but the Thistle winger's low shot rebounded off the post. Bottom side Dunfermline are still looking for their first home win of the season after going down to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Hearts at East End Park. The away side took the lead in the second half through Gary Glen and they doubled the advantage thanks to Darren Barr four minutes later for the points before Marius Zaliukas scored a late own goal. |
