Shaun Wane: Was pleased with the professionalism of his Wigan players

Coach Shaun Wane praised the attitude of his Wigan players as they ran out comfortable 36-6 winners against Wakefield on Monday.

The Warriors backed up their 28-10 win over St Helens on Good Friday with a seven-try demolition of the Wildcats in wet conditions at the DW Stadium.

Wigan led 16-0 at the break thanks to tries from Thomas Leuluai, Anthony Gelling and Darrell Goulding.

Further tries in the second half from George Carmont, who scored twice, Goulding and Josh Charnley extended Wigan's unbeaten run to three matches and moved them up to second in the table following defeats for Warrington and Hull FC.

"I think with it being wet, two games in a few days, it could have easily got a bit ugly but I have to say it was a professional job," Wane stated afterwards.

"Our backroom staff have been outstanding, the way the likes of (director of performance) Mark Bitcon have prepared the team and what we have done is outstanding. I am a very happy man and I have had a great Easter."

Crucial conditioning

Having made a couple of changes, Wane was pleased with the performances of both Logan Tomkins and Anthony Gelling who were handed the chance to impress in rare starts.

"I thought Logan and Anthony did well," Wane continued. "They are two young players who have not played many games and they have come in and acquitted themselves very well. Overall I am very happy and we will get ready for next weekend.

"I know what it is like to play the Easter games and it is hard work, but we got better as the game went on. Mark Bitcon and Mick Turner, our two conditioners, have done a great job in preparing them and we as coaches cannot take any credit for that."

Agar downbeat

Wakefield coach Richard Agar was predictably downbeat after seeing his side crash to a third consecutive defeat, but insists that lack of effort is not a problem.

"In the first half in particular our application was really good," he said. "We completed a lot of sets and looked good with the ball and defensively in the middle of the park we really stood up, but in the first 20 minutes of the second half some back-to-back sets hurt us.

"The reality of today is that it was a bit of a mismatch in quality of personnel, but for effort and commitment I thought our boys tried hard and gave their all for the 80 minutes.

"Some of the young guys will gain tremendous experience and a lot of confidence for some of the things they did in the game."
