Ward calls it quitsSteelers star decides to retire from the NFLHines Ward: Has decided to retire after being released by the Steelers Former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward has announced his retirement from the NFL after 14 seasons in the league. Ward caught exactly 1,000 passes for 12,083 yards and 85 touchdowns over the course of his career, with all three marks being Steeler records. The third-round draft pick spent the whole of his career with Pittsburgh, his lengthy tenure only being eclipsed by 15-year centre Mike Webster in the history of the franchise. Ward was released by the Steelers at the end of the 2011 season and has decided to retire rather than try and play on with another team. "Today I'm officially retiring as a Pittsburgh Steeler. And as much as I will miss football, my teammates, coaches and the game, I don't want to play in any other uniform," the 36-year-old said. "The black and gold runs deep in me and I will be a Steeler for life." He added: "You guys have given me the best years of my life. I will never forget that. Never." Ward was involved in two Super Bowl triumphs with the Steelers - at the end of the 2005 and 2008 seasons - being named as the Most Valuable Player in the former success. The four-time Pro Bowler caught a total of 14 passes for 244 yards and two touchdowns in three Super Bowl appearances. |
