Westfield, 23, was sentenced to four months in jail in February after he pleaded guilty to one count of accepting or obtaining a corrupt payment to bowl in a way that would allow the scoring of runs. He will serve half of that term.

His then team-mate Kaneria was arrested in connection with the case but later released without charge. Westfield's QC Mark Milliken-Smith claimed in court that the former Pakistan spinner had set up the deal, and it also emerged that other Essex players had heard Kaneria talk about spot-fixing.

Westfield was issued with an interim suspension by the ECB after his sentencing and it has now been announced that both he and Kaneria will appear before the governing body's disciplinary panel at a hearing which is expected to take place in early May.

An ECB statement read: "Mervyn Westfield and Danish Kaneria have been notified that an ECB disciplinary panel hearing will take place at which charges will be heard relating to their alleged breaches of the ECB's anti-corruption directives.

"The charges relate to the corrupt activities which led to Mervyn Westfield's criminal conviction in February.

"The chairman of the ECB's cricket discipline commission, Gerard Elias QC, will chair the hearing."
