11:51 Brummies dance past Wolves |
Brummies dance past WolvesWoffinden's 14-point haul not enough for visitors at Perry BarrBirmingham opened their account in the 2012 Elite League season with an impressive 50-42 home victory over midlands rivals Wolverhampton. The Brummies bounced back from successive defeats to Swindon over the Easter period with a fine team display at Perry Barr Stadium, never surrendering the lead from the third race onwards. Reserve Josh Auty showed his value with 13 points from six rides, including three heat wins, while Sebastian Ulamek and captain Danny King both contributed eight apiece from their four outings. Defeat was a major disappointment for the Wolves, particularly after their opening two meetings of the campaign had been called off. They may have wished they had have been spared a trip to Birmingham too, despite the best efforts of big guns Tai Woffinden and Fredrik Lindgren. Woffinden in particular was outstanding for the visitors, scoring 14 points out of a possible 15 that included winning the final heat of the night. It seemed, however, that his colleagues were not keen to listen to his advice. "To be honest, I've told them about the line but nobody is going in it. I don't know what's wrong with them," he said after his victory in the 13th race. Lindgren did his best with 12 points but the rest of the Wolverhampton line-up simply failed to back up their dynamic duo, much to the disappointment of their manager, Peter Adams. Poor"I thought we were poor in the extreme," he told Sky Sports. "We feared a bit of a backlash from Birmingham after their last two results, and they were very solid. "They had a star reserve in Josh and we didn't. It's just not good enough. "We've got to get rid of these inconsistencies. Riders are winning one race and then coming last in the next, that's not good enough." Adams even went so far as to suggest he may have to make changes if things don't improve in the near future, adding: "Woffinden and Lindgren did okay, but we can't live off the back of those two all season long. "We've got to have other people contributing from one to seven. If these riders can't do that, then we will perhaps have to find some that can." The Brummies have no such problems with their team - Ben Barker showed a welcome return to form, though the most crucial ride of the night came from Ulamek in the 11th heat. The Pole - competing back in the Elite League for the first time since 2007 - held off Lindgren when the Wolves were on a tactical ride, meaning a possible 8-1 result instead ended up being just a 5-3. "We wanted to get this result and move forward in the season," Auty said afterwards. "We've had two bad home defeats and we didn't need reminding. So we just had to dig deep and pull out the points."
