In the day's other games, Levante moved back into the top four of the Primera Liga after beating Atletico Madrid.

Elsewhere, Athletic Bilbao recorded their first league win in six games and Granada held Real Mallorca to a point.

Primera Liga leaders Real Madrid have now drawn three of their last five league games after being held to a goalless draw by Valencia at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Madrid did have a 10-point lead at one point, but it is now down to just four points and in-form Barcelona could cut it down to just one if they defeat Getafe at home on Tuesday night before Real's derby date with Atletico the following day.

Real started well with Cristiano Ronaldo hitting the post early on but they were unable to maintain the impetus and Valencia also hit the woodwork in both halves through Ricardo Costa and Tino Costa.

Karim Benzema was denied by a double save from keeper Vicente Guaita as Real pressed late on but Valencia also had their chances with Jordi Alba denied in a one-on-one with keeper Iker Casillas.

Levante moved back into the top four after two goals in the first 10 minutes from Valdo and Arouna Kone were enough to hand them a 2-0 victory over a tired looking Atletico Madrid.

The game was barely 60 seconds old when Valdo stole in between the Atletico central defence to head home Jose Barkero's pinpoint cross. Barkero was the creator again nine minutes later when his free-kick was powered home by Kone.

The hosts should have had a third when Barkero blasted over when free inside the area, but despite improving in the second half Atletico never really threatened a comeback.

Their miserable day was complete when Miranda was sent-off for a second yellow card seven minutes from time.

Athletic Bilbao recorded their first league win in six games as Fernando Llorente's second-half header ended Sevilla's recent revival.

The Spain international struck the bar when presented with an open goal in the first half while Alvaro Negredo had an effort cleared off the line for the visitors.

But Llorente made amends for his earlier miss when he bulleted home Markel Susaeta's cross two minutes into the second half.

Mikel San Jose struck the post following a wonderful run by Iker Muniain as Athletic struggled to put the game to bed, but they held on to move within two points of Osasuna in the final Europa League spot.

Real Mallorca and Granada moved a point further clear of the Primera Division relegation zone after a forgettable goalless draw at the Iberostar.

Michael Pereira came closest to breaking the deadlock for the hosts as his dipping volley from outside the area clipped the top of the crossbar just after the hour mark.

Granada improved as an attacking force in the final quarter, but they were unable to replicate their late winner at Racing Santander last weekend as Dudu Aouate comfortably turned away efforts from Abel Gomez and Franco Jara.
