Scorpions stung by HalifaxSwinton smash Thunder to seal their place in Monday's drawHalifax eased into the fifth round of the Carnegie Challenge Cup with an 84-28 rout of South Wales Scorpions at the Shay on Saturday. The Scorpions, who conceded home advantage due to the unavailability of their ground, took the lead after just two minutes when full-back David James sprinted through a gap in the home defence for the opening try. However Halifax hit back in style, establishing a 36-12 interval lead before running riot in the second half with nine further tries. Anthony Bowman, Paul White and Steve Tyrer all bagged two apiece, while Callum Casey, Craig Ashall, Joe Chandler, Paul Handforth, Sean Hesketh, Dane Manning, Makali Aizue, Sean Penkywicz also crossed. There was a try as well for Lee Paterson, who kicked 12 goals in total to finish with an impressive personal haul of 28 points. James did notch a second try for South Wales, while Rodney Peake, Steve Parry and Jack Murphy added others. Meanwhile, Kevin Penny and Martin Ainscough both scored two tries in Swinton's 70-10 win over Championship One side Gateshead Thunder at Leigh Sports Village. Ian Mort kicked 11 goals in the rout with Thunder replying with scores from Ryan McBride and Stephen Welton, Ryan Clarke adding one conversion.
