MLB: Tigers stunnedRays produce late rally to claim victory
Justin Verlander: Blew up in the ninth Star Detroit pitcher Justin Verlander carried a one-hitter into the ninth before blowing up to give the Tampa Bay Rays a 4-2 win and bring an end to the only remaining 100% record in the American League. With the Tigers holding a 2-0 lead, Verlander allowed a run to score on a wild pitch, before Evan Longoria singled in the tying run. Ben Zobrist then broke the tie with a two-run single off reliever Jose Valverde. The New York Yankees beat Baltimore in extra innings for the second consecutive day as Nick Swisher's two-run homer in the 10th game earned them a 4-2 victory. The teams exchanged two-run shots in the first two innings, Curtis Granderson putting the Yankees ahead and Mark Reynolds' pulling the Orioles level. The Orioles led by one after the fifth, but Granderson levelled it up in the seventh before Swisher intervened in extras. After losing their first three the Yankees have now won three in succession to recover to 3-3. Texas closer Joe Nathan allowed three runs in the ninth as the Seattle Mariners came from behind to claim a 4-3 win. Back-to-back homers from Ian Kinsler and Elvis Andrus appeared to have given the Rangers all the offense they needed, but the Mariners came back, topping off their recovery with a tie-breaking RBI single from John Jaso. The Oakland Athletics were gifted a 5-4 win over Kansas City in the 12th inning as Jonathan Broxton hit Jonny Gomes with his first pitch to allow Jemile Weeks to score. Minnesota beat the Los Angeles Angels 6-5, Toronto were 3-1 winners over Boston and AJ Pierzynski had four RBIs, including a three-run homer, to lead the Chicago White Sox to a 10-6 decision over Cleveland. Bad weekA bad week for the Miami Marlins continued as they lost 7-1 to Roy Halladay and the Philadelphia Phillies without suspended manager Ozzie Guillen. Guillen was this week forced to apologise for controversial comments about Cuban leader Fidel Castro, which angered many Marlins fans. If he was hoping on-field matters would take the focus off him he was to be disappointed as Halladay dominated with seven innings of one-run ball. Chris Denorfia's two-run homer gave the San Diego Padres a 2-1 win over Arizona as the National League's only remaining perfect start came to an end. Meanwhile Tim Lincecum endured his second rough start as the Colorado Rockies beat the San Francisco Giants 17-8. Stephen Strasburg shone for the Washington Nationals in a 4-0 win over the New York Mets, striking out nine in six scoreless innings. The Atlanta Braves beat the Houston Astros 6-3 and the Los Angeles Dodgers saw off the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-1. There were also wins for the Cincinnati Reds, 4-3 over the St Louis Cardinals, and the Milwaukee Brewers, who beat the Chicago Cubs 2-1.
